The Transfer Process

We are here to answer:

  • What do I do first? → Meet with a counselor (Please see our appointment page).
  • How do I choose a school? → Research and meet representatives.
  • How do I apply? → Use the transfer tools and application resources (See below).

Lifting as We Climb

Transfer is not a single path—it is a collection of opportunities. At Napa Valley College, students explore a wide range of options including CSU, UC, private, and out-of-state universities to find the best fit for their goals.

As students learn about different pathways, requirements, and destinations, they gain the confidence to make informed decisions about their future. In sharing these journeys, they also help others see the many possibilities available beyond community college.

We lift as we climb by expanding access, broadening understanding, and supporting every student’s unique transfer path.

Step 1: Meet with a Counselor

✓ Complete required coursework
✓ Request transcripts
✓ Submit financial aid applications

Step 6: Monitor Your Applications

After applying:

  • Check your email regularly

Transfer agreements are partnerships between Napa Valley College and four-year colleges and universities. Depending on the institution, these agreements may provide guaranteed admission, priority consideration, or a clearly defined transfer pathway for students who meet specific requirements. Requirements vary by institution, major, and program.

NVC has transfer agreements with select University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and private or out-of-state institutions.

Next step: Meet with a counselor to understand which agreements apply to your major and transfer goals.

 UC TAG

Some UC campuses offer a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG), which provides guaranteed admission for eligible students who complete specific coursework and GPA requirements.

Six UC campuses offer Transfer Admission Guarantee () programs:
UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz.

Students complete and submit the TAG application from September 1st-31st.

Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT)

Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T or AS-T) is a degree designed to help students transfer to a California State University (CSU) as a junior.

Many California private universities (AICCU institutions) and participating HBCUs also recognize the Associate Degree for Transfer and may offer admission benefits for students who complete an ADT.

Benefits of an ADT:

  • Guaranteed admission somewhere in the CSU system
  • Junior standing upon transfer
  • Priority consideration at local CSU campuses and similar majors
  • A clear pathway toward completing a bachelor's degree
  • ADTs do not guarantee admission to a specific CSU campus or major.

Students should meet with a counselor to confirm whether an ADT is the best path for their intended major and university.

Students interested in earning an ADT, please check out the   website , where a list of the partner schools can be downloaded with website links.

The CSU Transfer Planner can also help you enroll in a , guaranteeing your spot at CSU when you’re ready to transfer.

Transfer-Aligned ADTs (Beginning Fall 2026)

NVC is updating select ADTs to better align with UC Transfer Pathways while continuing to support CSU transfer opportunities.

These updated degrees (such as Math 2.0 and Physics 2.0) may better prepare students for UC majors and remain valid for CSU transfer.

  • Students may continue under their current catalog requirements if already in progress
  • Changes are being implemented pending state approval
  • Choosing between pathways depends on your transfer goals

Meet with a counselor before changing or selecting a degree pathway.

Students are not limited to California schools. Many choose to transfer to out-of-state or online universities.

Out-of-State Universities

Some states participate in tuition discount programs like:

  • Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), which reduces tuition at participating public universities

Next Step

Students should meet with a counselor to compare UC, CSU, HBCU, out-of-state, and online options to choose the best transfer path for their goals.
